Motivated to be a big ol' loser

My gym is running a contest in September to see who can be the biggest loser in terms of inches / weight. The prize? A $2,500 shopping spree. Wish me luck and send me your tips!!

Run, baby, run

I just finished my second outdoor run (I'm a treadmill baby, what can I say) and as I was sitting on my stoop after my cool down, trying not to faint, I got to thinking...

  • It's really hard to run in 88 degree weather; it's especially hard to run in 88 degree weather and high humidity, but I am going to keep on going because I bet at some point, it does get easier.
  • Even though it was hot and humid, this second run was so much better than my first. When I started out, it felt easy and there was a good spring in my step. I felt myself starting out a little too fast, so I slowed the pace down some and was able to run the first mile without stopping.
  • It really is okay to stop and walk for a few blocks. Munnie was right.
  • I hear a lot of people say they run to think or to clear their heads. My thoughts while running go something like this: 'okay, you have to run to that stop sign and then you can see how you feel; now you have to run to the end of that block up ahead, then you can stop to walk if you need to; don't be such a weenie--your body needs the work and the only way you're going to build endurance is if you keep pushing your body...so keep running"; maybe someday I'll get to that clear headed run! For now, I'm employing Munnie's mind tricking tricks!
  • Running is actually fun. I know, I can't believe I wrote that either. But I feel awesome right now and now that I don't feel like I'm going to die, I actually have that clear-headed feeling I need to wrap up a PPT I've been working on.

Parents and the digital age

My parents have joined the 21st Century and are now online. I came in this morning to a really sweet note from my mom, and I have to tell you, it made my day! It was even better than logging into Facebook and actually having a message in my inbox. :) My dad is still hesitant to jump on the email bandwagon (his words to me--if I have something to tell you, I'd rather pick up the phone so I can actually talk to you instead of sitting down and typing something out. Smile). But according to my mom's mail, Dad is already getting the hang of shopping online...

What's new with me?

Whoops, sorry guys. I've been remiss in updating my blog these days as I seem to be using Facebook to update everyone on what's happening in real-time and to send one-off messages. So if you're on Facebook, look me up. In a nutshell, here's what's happening with me these days:

  • I took a quick four-day trip down to Orlando and Jacksonville, FL in June. It was a much-needed break and I came back to Boston rested, recharged and tan (albeit with funny tan lines!). Activities included Sea World and Disneyworld, followed by two days of lounging by the beach and perusing the shops in Neptune Beach (basically Jacksonville). A friend of mine lives there and let us use his house while he was vacationing in Hawaii. I was actually trying to set him up with the girl I was traveling with and have recently been reminded of why I don't set up my friends.
  • Summer BBQ season is officially underway and I love it! I went to a great Fourth of July one last night and am headed to another one tomorrow. Speaking of Fourth of July, I'm really glad that I went down to the Esplanade to watch the show this year. I was undecided as to whether to go since I've done it three of the four years I've lived here. But, the show was AMAZING and it really is spectacular to be in Boston on the Fourth as this is where U.S. independence began. A couple of years ago, I did the full Fourth of July tourist thing and watched the Parade down Tremont St., followed by the reading of the Declaration of Independence at Faneuil Hall, a tour of the U.S.S. Bataan (the ship Amanda's brother was serving on, so we got an insider's tour), picnic in Columbus Park and fireworks on the Esplanade with the Boston Pops (Big & Rich were the entertainment that year).
  • Boston's weather hasn't been the greatest as of late, but it's all good. My plans today of heading down to the Public Garden with a book and a blanket to read and people watch all day has fallen by the wayside, given the gloomy day outside. It's pretty humid so we're expecting crazy thunderstorms this afternoon and through the evening. It sounds like the perfect day to stay inside and clean before heading out to find a wedding present for my little brother.
  • Matthew is getting married in three weeks, to the day. It's times like this that I wish I lived closer to my family. I wish I could be part of the planning process. Since I'm not there, I am playing the role of listener...let's just say wedding planning appears to be awfully stressful and my parents and brother both need someone to vent to. Happy to play that role! I get to see my family in 19 days and am very much looking forward to helping them with the crazy last-minute wedding stuff, and then stopping to breathe and catch up with them. The wedding should be interesting...her family are crazy partiers, mine, not so much. We'll have our own brand of crazy I'm sure, especially as my cousin will be debuting her new ta-tas at the wedding and I'm sure at least one person in my family will say something wildly inappropriate (and it will probably be me, knowing my knack for sticking my foot in my mouth!). Sidenote: I'll be working out of Portland for two days the week of July 27, although I'm not sure just which two days yet. Stay tuned!
  • My dating life is non-existent (nothing new there!) but I am experiencing secondhand the crazy world of dating through several friends right now. They aren't having great dating experiences, but the stories they tell afterward are quite amusing! (and for the record, I'm not opposed to dating. If a cool guy comes along, great, if he doesn't, great. It's all good!).
  • How have I lived this long without a personal trainer? I recently joined a new gym where the program is to do a one-hour workout three times a week that combines intense strength training with equally as intense cardio...both with a personal trainer. My body can do a lot more than I give it credit for and I need the extra motivation of someone pushing me. So far, so good...I like how I feel, what I am seeing in the mirror these days and have started running on my own. I find that I really look forward to my workouts. Stress relief combined with a healthier me. What's not to like?
  • I checked out my recent blog comments: Tarah isn't happy about the lackof posts (neither am I...thanks for the kick in the butt and here's your entry); no name 1 is selling gold, and lots of it; and no name 2 says that Charlie, the hot firefighter whom you may remember from this post, is single (you don't say! Is he coming to Boston anytime soon? Smile)
That's it from me, folks. How's everyone else doing?

Travel sweet travel

Sweet goodness, I have some travel coming up. Most of you reading this blog know me well enough to know that I go crazy if I'm in one place for too long. So, three trips in three months will be good...wouldn't mind more (!) but it's a nice starting point. :) The trip to Raleigh is work-related and will be fun. We're planning a major event to celebrate International MPS Awareness Day and I get the opportunity to manage this event and meet some of the fabulous people we've been working with. The FL trip is pure vacay, minus one 1/2 day of work. Miss Tarah is coming to my side of the country so we're going to meet up for some fun in the sun. Can't wait to see you, Tarah! And of course, my Oregon trip is to celebrate my little bro's wedding, which I'm quite excited about. Looking waaaay ahead to next August/September, I'm starting to plan my sabbatcal. It was a toss up between the Trans-Siberian Railroad and Australia, but Australia has won out. I'll be spending 4 - 5 weeks bumming around the country with my friend Amanda. She's escaping, I mean finishing up her service with, the Peace Corps next summer so we're traveling to celebrate. Should be good times!!

Where are all of you (my one dear reader) headed this year? Any fun trips you're looking forward to?
